Month: June 2016

UPDATE: So, as an artist, you tend to go through many changes. Switching up your look, style, persona. It all goes under reconstruction constantly. You all remember Stanley Rimpson Jr.? Well he is back but as SO! Still edgy and just as passionate as ever, SO! Is his music. Be on the lookout for his EP “Loner” which will be dropping September 9th.

Artist Bio:

SO! is an astonishingly gifted artist whose music bridges the gaps between the melodies of rap and the groove of RnB

A true lone wolf, SO! refuses to play by anyone’s rule, preferring to make his own, like a true outcast. One of the most striking feature of his music is that both his artist persona and material read like bold statements showcasing his vision. While his music is direct and as stone-cold as the artist himself, SO! is also able to let his sound speak to the core of the listener. A proud straight-edge individual whose sole addiction is his love for music, SO! has chosen to travel the less traveled road and make true sonic art with a diverse and special approach that truly underlines his outcast character and freedom-infused vision.

Cee-Lo Green

The song “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley has been on repeat in my head for the last two weeks. Not only has this song found its way into my sleep, I sing it in the shower, in the car, at work, basically everywhere. Then I started to think about the pure genius Cee-Lo Green is. This is not the first time he has done this. “Smiling Faces”, “Run”, “Going On”, “Bad Mutha”, “Bright Lights Bigger City”, all of these, and some of his other songs, at some point have controlled my mental IPod. Cee-Lo is THE SHIT, and so slept on. Every single one of his albums has a different vibe. He raps, does R&B, Pop, Christmas music, Indie, Soul…. like, WHERE IS HIS YONCE STATUS!? The last time I think I was this passionate about an artist out of nowhere was when I found out there was more the the Black Eyed Peas than “Boom Boom Pow”. So currently I’m listening to his “Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections”. He is SHOWING OUT! I am so picky when it comes to listening to an album straight through. Only few have accomplished creating one that I will listen to all the songs and not skip around. This is one of those. He takes you on some woke shit and yet proceeds to keep it thuggish. Keep in mind, this Cee-Lo spree I’m on has been built up over time. I’ve always listened to his music, but now I’ve reached fan girl. He can do no wrong. The thing I find crazy too, he has worked with EVERYBODY! His credentials come in books. Don’t sleep on this man. If you are, take this as a wake up call ‘cause you’s messing up. Go peep his music on Spotify.

2 Pac

June 16, 1971 – September 13, 1996

Lyrically controversial, socially woke, trend setter, beef header. Also known as, Tupac Shakur. With his rise to fame in the early 90’s, 2pac set the stage with his truth telling lyrics. Telling stories through songs like “Keep Your Head Up” and “Brenda’s Got a Baby”, he shared the many different aspects of hood life. 2Pac never held his tongue. Calling out the many injustices faced by the black community, Pac became the voice of a generation.  Many deemed his words and actions to be a persona, ignoring his upbringing in East Harlem, and being the son of Black Panther activist, Afeni Shakur. As he grew as an artist and expanded his reach, Pac graced the big screen in movies like “Poetic Justice” and “Juice”, showing off his early arts’ school talents. Pac would go on to create more hits like “Dear Mama”, “California Love”, “How Do You Want It”, and many others. His life came to a tragic end in 1996 when he was shot in Las Vegas. 2Pac will always be a King in these streets and in rap culture.

“No one knows my struggle, they only see the trouble
Not knowin it’s hard to carry on when no one loves you
Picture me inside the misery of poverty
No man alive has ever witnessed struggles I survived”- 2Pac

Brae Leni

Currently listening to Brae Leni’s “Choreophilia” video on YouTube. I am realizing that there are so many artists out here that are killing the game! This song has such a neo-soul vibe to it, totally makes you want to dance and sing along. His voice is very warm and inviting so it goes with the music well. The video is so fun and light, with people dancing and singing and just vibing with each other, showing the fun aspects of love. I’m also really feeling his music on soundcloud. The songs ‘Too Many Women’ and ‘Heedless’ are two of my favorites! Both are very mellow and easy on the ears, and they both show the versatility of the artist. Based off of his vocals and main sound of his music, you can tell this guy has an old soul.He even has a Temptations cover on his soundcloud. I also noticed that a previous K-List featured artist,Stanley Rimpson Jr. , who is one of my absolute favorites, is on some on Brae Leni’s music. Small world! So glad to know these artists are all on the come up together. Peep the Q & A with Brae Leni Below.

Q-How long have you been doing music? How did you start out?

A-I have been singing ever since 5 years of age, so 2 decades in November! I realized it was my calling and passion during my 1 semester of college at Arkansas State University, and I’ve been even more devoted to music ever since.

Q- If you could describe your journey so far, how would you?

A-It has been bittersweet, I wouldn’t trade the failures for anything. I keep learning, growing, and getting better. I love the direction I’m heading in, #SoulMusicStillExist I believe as long as I keep God first and stay focused my dreams will come true. #GodSpeed

Q-Any major influences ? Where do you get your ideas from?

A-This is a tough & fun question, but I’ll say Michael Jackson, Kanye West, D’angelo, Musiq Soulchild, and all the MOTOWN greats have inspired my sound and approach to music. However, I do believe you can learn from and should appreciate all music.

Q-Describe your sound?

A-I’m a balladeer, so I’ll write a bunch of love songs… or songs that appeal to women. I think my sound would be a fuse between Marvin Gaye & John Legend, just a soulful & unique vibe you can’t hear anywhere else.

Q-Where do you see your music going?Who do you want it to reach?

A-I want my music to reach everyone. I don’t care if it’s kids, adults, blacks, whites, North Pole, or South Pole. I do this for everyone. I think I will snag a few Grammies, and go on a world tour once or twice. Pray for me!

Q-Any upcoming projects, things for people to look out for?

A-I’ll be teaming up with Japanese Producers/Sound Engineers Waq Takahashi & Yuki T-Groove Takahashi to conjure up a 5 song EP. The release date is TBD. Until then I’m promoting my new music video and single, Choreophilia produced by Lauren Noélle.
