Got a text from my mom the other day asking if I knew who Andra Day was. I immediately remembered the sensual and soulful voice that accompanied Stevie Wonder in last year’s Christmas commercial. I not once stopped to think “Hey, Kori, blog about her”. That was obviously a mistake, LOL. So now I’m chilling and listening to her music on Spotify, I think I’m in love. Her voice has a soulful warmth and edge to it that reminds me of Rihanna meets Amy Winehouse. Especially the way she rounds her words and has a bit of a growl when starting phrases. She also reminds me a bit of Lianne La Havas because of the style her music has to it. It’s very light but heavy lyrically. It pulls you in so easily and refuses to let you leave. The whole time I’m sitting here it’s like, okay I like her, and I try to change the artist, but a new song will start and I’m intrigued once again. The thing I like the most about Andra Day, you can tell she has lived. Artist that tend to tell stories with their music, clearly have lived through some things and I love that because it gives them a depth that I feel music is beginning to lack now. So give this girl a chance because she is HOT! So far I’ve only made it to Gold (because I’m currently listening to her) on her “Cheers to the Fall” album, but I’m sure I’ll be listening to all of her music by the time the day is over. Check her out with me on Spotify.
